Physical Education is taught to all P-6 classes by a specialist teacher for 40min per week, with all classes receiving additional time with their class teacher for physical activity and class games during the week for consolidation.

All lessons cover content from the current Australian Curriculum, focusing on knowledge and understanding and application of skills. At YSS we encourage and promote the value of movement concepts, lifelong participation, fair play and inclusivity, by providing a variety of movement challenges and opportunities to enhance a range of personal and social skills that contribute to self and other’s overall health and wellbeing.

In the lower primary levels, (Prep- Year 2), Physical Education lessons focus on physical literacy and the opportunity for students to move, think and learn through active play, perceptual motor activities and minor games involving repetition of movements and skills. Students will explore and develop basic fundamental movement skills and rules, as well as an understanding of personal, social and spatial awareness.

In the upper primary levels (Years 3 -6), Physical Education lessons focus on students developing, practising and refining key fundamental movement skills and developing a tactical understanding of skills (offense and defence, leadership), strategies (attack, defence, contest the player, ball or space) and socio-cultural components (e.g. share/pass the ball) through a variety of lead up games and major sports (traditional and new) that may be taught and played in later years.

Yandina State School is fortunate to be a part of the National Sporting Schools Funding Program, which enables us to utilise the expertise of specialist sporting development officers to help teach our students the fundamental skills and key aspects of their sport through a game sense approach. The Sporting grants assist our school enormously in providing and expanding our equipment resources for PE lessons and school sporting activities.
