This year in Japanese, students have been 'paid' for answering questions, volunteering to speak Japanese, good efforts with written tasks, and exceptional behaviour. They have learned that Japanese people use yen, that their paper notes come in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10,000 yen; and that the worth in Australian dollars fluctuates depending on the exchange rate.
Their (sadly, fake) yen notes have been kept in bank accounts, with each student having a bankbook.
Misbehaviour or refusal to participate resulted in money being withdrawn from their bank accounts. I'm happy to say that this was very rare! The total money earned by a class needed to reach 200,000 yen in order to have a class auction, where students could bid on various Japanese items (some of which were hidden until after they won the bid.)
5/6P was the first to reach the total needed, closely followed by 5/6H then 5R. This week all three classes had their auctions. Congratulations to all students for your efforts to help your class reach the total needed. Special mention to the students who won the bid for a "mystery item" only to discover that it was a bento-style lunch, delivered to them at school.
If classes reach their next target by Week 8, they'll be enjoying a sushi party in Week 9 or 10. GANBATTE! (Do your best.)
